ACTION! Track Record

Examples of local community Action! 1980 – 2009.

AllenValleyBluebellWoodEarly 80’s. Allen Valley bluebell woods were threatened by a DOT road scheme. I worked with local children and parents to secure the support of interested celebrities, including John Betjeman, to protect these spectacular woods.Picture on the left taken May 2009. Bluebell woods still intact!

StKewSchoolLate 80’s/early 90’s. My three daughters all attended St Kew CP School. As secretary of St Kew CP PTA I worked with head teacher John Chapman and parents to accelerate the long campaigned for improvements, corresponded with the then Secretary of State Kenneth Baker and then met with and presented the Assistant Secretary of State for Education, Angela Rumbold, with our package of demands. Soon after, the necessary funds were released and the works began.

CornwallSchoolSurfersChallengeFullPosterMid 80’s to early 90’s. Set up and ran the UK’s first surf contest exclusively for secondary school students – The Cornwall School Surfers Challenge – at Polzeath. Supported by a team of  judges and officials drawn from the experienced surf and lifeguard community across Cornwall and the Cornwall Youth Service with their legendary double-decker ‘Chatterbus’ and working with the Polzeath Residents Association. Around 130 young surfers entered each year from schools across the Duchy Of Cornwall from St Just to Bude. Charity beneficiaries included the RNLI, First Air Ambulance and St John Ambulance.

PolzeathPortacabin1989. Co-founder and founding secretary of Polzeath Surf Life Saving Club.Under the training regime of Lindsey Anderson it has gone on to become one of the most vibrant and successful Surf Life Saving clubs in Cornwall.

1994. Spearheaded St Breock Parish Council‘s campaign to highlight landscape, heritage and democracy issues raised by planning inspector approval of a wind-farm next to the Longstone on the summit of St Breock Downs against the wishes of ALL levels of Cornwall’s local government + CPRE and other bodies.

StBreockTurbinesBlueWith support and participation of the Grand Bard of the Cornish Gorsedd and Cornwall’s chair of planning, I organised a Celtic Beltane Festival ceremony to draw a line against any further industrialisation of such important Cornish heritage and landscape sites.

SurfToSave1989-90s. Helped the ‘Surf To Save’ team to set up the ‘Surf To Save’  environmental surfing contest at Polzeath.

MandelbrotOrchesta1Also created the Mandelbrot Orchestra involving musicians from Penzance to Scotland, the BBC Bristol Sound Unit, 3SFilms of Penzance and fire breathers and jugglers to provide a spectacular cliff top multimedia musical show for ‘Surf To Save’ on Tristram in 1994.

As a yachtsman, and a lifeguard of 15 years service with NCDC, I have taken great interest in protecting our marine environment and beaches. I campaigned for a split Rock/Padstow sewage scheme and recently, as a member of NCDC’s Beach User Forum, worked with NCDC towards better balancing beach use at Polzeath, protecting the dunes at Constantine Bay and working with the St Merryn community to persuade the RNLI that building a permanent building in the middle of the dunes at Constantine Bay was not a good idea.(See Keeping  Constantine Country at Facebook). If I am elected I would take a particular interest in council business to do with our coastal environment.

I have a proven track record of protecting our environment, supporting activities that enrich the life of our community and the ability to research, analyse and tackle difficult social issues without fear, favour or party political bias.
